Cachalot
Alan Dean Foster
Del Rey (Ballantine Books) · 1980
1980s · very good
Out of guilt, Earth gave Cachalot, a planet that is one great ocean, to the few surviving whales, porpoises and dolphins, and kept humans to a few islands and floating towns. The cetaceans seem to have forgiven thousands of years of slaughter. Then something starts destroying the towns, leaving no survivors. Del Rey published it new in 1980, billing Foster as the bestselling author of Alien.
