Iceworld
Hal Clement
Del Rey (Ballantine Books) · 1977
1970s · very good
Through the viewport the planet is mottled and bleak, and to Sallman Ken far too cold for life: sulfur lies there as a solid, and water runs as a liquid. Yet smugglers from his own world are trading with its natives for a new narcotic, and Ken has to get down to the surface to find the source. Clement's novel ran in Astounding before Gnome Press published it in 1953.
