The Hall of Fame took twelve years to fill four volumes. The Science Fiction Writers of America chose the first three: twenty-six stories edited by Robert Silverberg, then twenty-two novellas edited by Ben Bova and split into companions IIA and IIB, where H. G. Wells's "The Time Machine" sits a volume away from E. M. Forster's "The Machine Stops".
Volume III, from Avon in 1982, gathers sixteen Nebula winners from 1965 to 1969, and is the only one that had never been a book before.
